Welcome to Hammocks & Hideaways! Why the name Hammocks & Hideaways? In our opinion, true relaxation is laying in a hammock in the middle of nowhere. As long as you have 2 trees, poles or something to tie on to, you can take a hammock pretty much anywhere and soak up the beauty around you while getting some serious R & R. Can you really go wrong with hammock time? (spoken in a sing song MC Hammer voice) We use the term hideaways loosely. To us a hideaway is any place physically or mentally that recharges us. Be that alone in the mountains, relaxing on the beach, or around the table with loved ones.
Together we want to share how we spend our time, whether that involves a backpacking trip, time with loved ones or a simple evening walk. We feel the world is too big and far too beautiful to limit yourself to staying inside and watching TV all the time. Don’t get us wrong, we love our evenings in watching Lord of the Rings and knitting (yes we are that cool!) and I am sure we will talk about those things too. But, we feel like people limit themselves and what they are capable of; they fear getting out of their comfort zone. Or they assume you have to be super fit or have expensive gear to go on adventures. We challenge you to stretch yourself from your comfort zone, we promise there is a 99.9% chance you won’t regret it. We want to show you that you don’t always have to spend a lot of money to enjoy the world. We are crazy cheap, so if we can find a way to save money and still have a good time, we will do it. That doesn’t mean we don’t splurge on things, because we do. We are not experts at any of our hobbies, we tend to learn as we go through trial and error, or research. Todd is big on research. With that said, what you will find on our blog is lots of pictures that recap our big and small adventures, DIY’s that have saved us money, tips and tricks we have learned, and recipes (let’s face it, what’s an adventure without food!). Thanks for taking the time to read this, hopefully we can inspire you to explore the world and your surroundings little by little and enjoy time with those you love. Please feel free to email or comment if you have any questions!
Hi! I’m Sheena, welcome!
I’ve wanted to start a blog for years but with my interests all over the place it was hard to focus in on something. I also knew I wanted something my husband and I could do together. While out hiking one day we got on the topic of blogging and realized that we both love sharing our adventures, but with family and friends so far away we never really get to show or tell them everything. Thus the idea for our blog was born. We moved to beautiful South Carolina from the gorgeous Pacific Northwest in September of 2014. Moving gave me perspective, it made me realize how much I took time with my loved ones for granted. I realized how much I miss our Sunday family dinners, birthday parties, holidays (despite how crazy they often got), the kids’ sporting events and other activities, and dinners with friends. I really miss all the adventures we had with everyone. Most of all I miss the company of all our loved ones. In my opinion, time with those you love is always time well spent.
Enough with all that mushy stuff! I also learned that when loved ones aren’t close by our schedule opens up… A LOT! This extra time has allowed us to explore new places and have a ton more adventures that we are excited to share with everyone!
Here is a little more about me:
*I love cook books, I can read a good cook book like a novel *I will almost always choose a hike in the mountains over the beach *snuggling with my husband feels like “home” *I almost always prefer scenery pictures over people pictures…so a combo of my favorite people and beautiful scenery is a definite winner in my book *waterfalls are one of my favorite things *hiking and backpacking is one of my favorite past times, it amazes me that your 2 feet can get you places you can’t normally go *kayaking is my favorite water activity *I was raised in the Pacific Northwest and it will always have my heart *I am an introvert but push myself to be more extroverted *my husband is my best friend and biggest supporter *I could lay in a hammock for days *I love a good DIY *I am frugal, so if I see something and think I can make it for less, I will try *homemade gifts are my favorite *I can watch/listen to waves at the Ocean for hours *I am a Psychology major who is still “trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up” *I love traveling and exploring new places (who doesn’t, right?!) *I love trying new foods and attempting to recreate my favorite dishes *I love thunder and lightning storms, they are very relaxing to me *I can be very awkward socially at times, I am working on it *my loved ones mean everything to me
Thanks for taking the time to read a little about me!
Hello blog viewers, my name is Todd. I feel, that in the world today people need to relax more. They need to find a release for their stress that weighs them down. Sheena and I find our mental and physical happy place on the trail, walking the neighborhood, kayaking, staying inside crafting, and you guessed it hangin’ in our hammocks. Generally, people think that to be active outdoors you need to be in tip-top shape and use only the most expensive equipment and gear. Heck no! I’m here to tell you that the “best” gear isn’t always the most expensive. I’ve known people who are in great shape with amazing gear ($$$) and still manage to not enjoy their treks. “WE” are Frugal, but “I” am cheap (not like washing Ziploc bags to air dry and use again, but i am all about a bargain). When I do buy something, you can be certain that I’ve done my homework. Whether that’s watching you tube videos, reading reviews, and if I can get my hands on it testing it out before i spend my hard earned simoleons. The tool that makes all adventures a hideaway is your outlook. Being able to “let down your hair” or “unwind” can make even a backyard outing feel like a 6 hour, Swedish deep tissue massage for your mind!
Having my amazingly supportive wife at my side through all my life adventures makes my heart smile. Like I always tell her, “before I met you baby cakes my world was black and white, now you add ALL kinds of color!” She is my everything. Before her I was a bystander in my own life, on cruise control watching everything pass me by, but now we are living life and making our own way together. Hammocks and Hideaways is more about finding your mental hideaway and enjoying time with friends, family and loved ones while relaxing and recharging your emotional batteries.
